How can we learn from the horse?

If you’ve been reading my newsletters, you know that I do several comparisons to many of the animals in our world. I believe that if we truly take the time to experience our world, we will see the many lessons we can learn from the natural energy and symbolic empowerment of many of these animals. Granted, they may not talk, walk, or act as we do, but they have many traits we tend to take for granted or simply choose to ignore.

In the past, we have done comparisons to the fox and snail. But one of my true heroes in the animal world is horses. They are strong yet gentle creatures, and as with any animals, when treated well they will love you unconditionally. But what many people don’t know about the horse is that they are always vigilant when it comes to potential threats. Their senses go on high alert when it comes to protecting their owners, their foals, or other horses in their fold. They are very aware of their surroundings at all times and will many times hear or sense something you can’t.

But they have many traits we can instill in ourselves if we simply pay attention to their behavior.

  • Horses love structure and the ability to anticipate events throughout the day.

  • Horses are very social animals; they rely on their herd for protection and companionship.

  • Horses are sensitive and emotional, forming deep loving bonds with humans and their fold.

  • Horses communicate better than any other animal through body language.

  • Horses need movement to stay healthy.

  • Horses are very smart and can figure things out quite quickly.

  • Horses have excellent memories. Even though they can forgive they will never forget.

Many times, we tend to forget about all the traits we have and how we managed in the wild before the world became a place of civilized ease. Yes, I said ease.

  • Instead of having to walk, we have cars, buses, trains, and planes to take us anywhere we want to go.

  • Instead of having to go hunting for our food, we go to a grocery store, pick it up, and cook it in an oven that does most of the work for us.

  • Instead of having to walk a mile to talk with someone, we simply pick up any device and either call, text, or tweet.

  • Instead of studying by the light of a candle, all we have to do is push a switch to illuminate the room with more light than any candle could provide.

In other words, life is good. We have so many things to make our lives easier at the touch of a button. But this also makes us lazy; and we take for granted many things that previously took time or effort. We also tend to lose ourselves a bit, and it dulls our senses. However, when you look at the many traits of a horse, they are good models for how we can certainly improve the health of our lives.

  • We can learn to be much more social rather than staring at a screen all day.

  • We can learn to communicate much better by putting those devices down and talking face-to-face.

  • We can live healthier lives with less stress and diseases by moving more. We were never meant to sit for a long period of time.

  • We can increase our memory power by relying more on our brains than on our phones.

You may see a theme here.

Essentially, we live better lives, with much less stress, when we learn to put away the devices we rely on way too much these days. Studies have found that we do better when we move, connect face-to-face, and sleep much better when we rely less on the devices that surround us. The natural world is calling us to have better energy and health! Take some time to be more like the horse and get back to the basics.

Here’s to living a much healthier life.
