Animals are often our closest companions.

This is especially so for the dogs and cats who live with us 24/7. We become used to their playfulness and affection, or even “naughty” and rambunctious behaviors we see as their identity or instinct. Yet we take for granted how closely they pay attention to us, tracking us more closely than we realize. They want to take care of us, while we expect it’s mostly us caring for them.

For those with horses, we know they are highly sensitive beings. And while they may live in our barn, or even a bit further away, not with us constantly each and every day, they tune deeply into our energy through the bond they have with us.

We become accustomed to our animals’ rhythms, confident we know what’s in their hearts and understand their quirks or habits.

Yet it can be difficult for us to understand what they are trying to tell us.

New behaviors that jump out as different can be hard to understand.

And it’s even tougher to notice changes that appear gradually or rather quietly. Dogs are known for their often stoic response to pain or trauma.

In many years of working with animals and their people, I am often asked, “How do I know what to watch for in my animal? What should I pay attention to that might be important, before it becomes an emergency?” This is a way to gain what is important to know.
