Find out how tuning into your senses can make your life more joyful even during challenging times.

We all have them. 5 senses in all.

  • Sight

  • Sound

  • Taste

  • Touch

  • Smell

Most of the animal world has them as well. These senses help us to not only enjoy the world but know when danger is near. When we rely on our devices more, we tend to ignore our senses or simply take them for granted. Are you taking your senses for granted?

  • When was the last time you sat down to eat and experienced all the flavors in the meal?

  • When was the last time you went outside, closed your eyes, and simply listened to all the sounds? Could you recognize them all?

  • When was the last time you really looked at the world? Did you see the different greens, blues, oranges, yellows or the varying colors mother nature bestows?

  • When you pet your dog, cat, or even run your fingers over the cover on your bed— what did you feel? Did you notice the different textures?

  • When you smell the air after a rainfall or when dinner is cooking in the oven— how does each smell make you feel?

Do you even take the time to relish the feeling that you get when you tune into your different senses, one at a time? Here’s a way to get back to your senses and realize how they each work separately as well as with your other senses. Take some time to do these simple sense tests. I imagine you will get a real appreciation for each of your senses when you only have to rely on one. See how your other senses become stronger and help you adapt to your surroundings. Of course, I recommend you do this in the safety of your home, but let’s give it a try.

  • Put on a noise-blocking headset, not to listen to music but for complete silence, and look around the room. Notice how you start to see things you never noticed before.

  • Now lay on the bed and blindfold yourself. Notice how your hearing becomes even more acute allowing you to hear things you could have never heard before.

  • When taking a bite of food, close your eyes and put your headset on again. How does the food taste or how does it smell? Do you taste all the ingredients your nose recognized?

These are really simple ways to see how one sense becomes much stronger allowing you to experience the same thing in a totally different way. This is how we learn to appreciate our senses and when our senses become more heightened. You will naturally sense your own inner energy more when you practice these techniques as well. When this happens, we learn to be more adaptable to challenges in our lives. Why is this? Because when we see how one sense takes over for another, we realize how our bodies can adapt to any given situation. Regardless of life challenges, our bodies are meant to not only protect us from danger but adapt accordingly, all we have to do is be willing to listen. Pay attention to the subtle signs, and letting your energy send you its calming signals helps you make the best decisions possible no matter what challenges you face.

Here's to your strengths and learning to trust in your senses.
