Why are teachers so stressed?

A recent survey found that teachers are one of the most stressed industries during 2018 and beyond. But why?

  • Yes, they deal with having to teach 30 students at a time.

  • Yes, they have had to come up with new and innovative ways to engage their students during the stay-at-home order.

  • Yes, they are one of the lowest paid industries considering the work it entails.

  • Yes, they have to deal with the new educational standards that come from both the board of education and local governments.

  • Yes, they are given a huge task to educate our kids and teens while dealing with the physical and psychological conflicts these children may be facing in their homes.

The list can go on and on but being a teacher just doesn’t seem to get the recognition it used to when our parents were growing up.

Just like many industries, the public views can many times skew our own perceptions of what I believe to be one of the noblest and most important industries we have. Some of you may disagree with me, but in reality, the more knowledgeable we all have the better decisions we can make, and this includes our children. The more they know about the past, present, and possible future the more they flourish.

But I believe we don’t give our teachers enough credit for all the work that they do.

Are there disagreements with parents, absolutely but their profession is one that you really have to love, have a passion to do, as you work to educate our future leaders, entrepreneurs, nurses, scientists, or future educators. We tend to look at this profession as a thankless job. Yet we too often focus on what we see as its ease and benefits:

  • Look at all the days they get off during the year while I work 40 – 60 hours a week.

  • Look at all the fun they have drawing with their students or singing songs, while I have to deal with deadlines and team members who can’t even show up on time.

  • Look at how easy it is to open a book, read, have a few tests and you’re done.

This may be how some of us look at this profession, but what we don’t see is:

  • How they have to deal with constant changes in the educational system, even if they disagree with the methods.

  • How they deal with parents pushing against them as they try to educate their kids.

  • How they are forced to buy much of their books and school materials out of their own pockets, when they are struggling many times to pay their own bills.

  • How when they ask for a raise, (that many have not seen in years), and are told to simply deal with the cards they’ve been dealt.

  • How many are working 2 and 3 jobs to pay their own bills, because of budget cuts in the school systems.

  • The verbal abuse from parents for not doing more for their kid(s).

  • How often they feel drained of energy after days, months, or years of their “thankless job.”

Teachers are a rare class of people. They have big hearts and big dreams for each of their students. They try to impart wisdom into the minds of these kids only to find that many times the system changes can cause confusion and frustration.

We need to thank our teachers more, as their jobs are not easy and their responsibility to our nation is great. We should be working in tandem with our teachers instead of telling them how to do their jobs. Appreciate the fact that they have a huge job to do, educate your children, while helping them deal with bullies, counsel them through family drama, and give them a safe space to learn.
