I Don’t Want to Return to the Office

It seems that more and more people are sending in their resignations when asked to return to the office.

Why?

Many had been promised the opportunity to work from home permanently but then the rules changed. Now they are being asked to come back to the office, and for some, they are asked to be vaccinated before they do. So, why the change of heart for many companies?

  • Many feel that folks need human interaction at work to be on the same page.

  • Management has expressed difficulty in managing virtual teams.

  • Some have expressed interest in coming back to the office.

Yet, statistics have shown that for most companies, remote productivity increased by 85 – 90%. Now granted the above are predominately management issues, but how do employees feel about this new change in mindset?

  • Employees have enjoyed the fact that they don’t have to spend, in some cases, hours on the road traveling back and forth to the office.

  • Many are realizing that their mental health is being stressed and compromised, but the drive and work environment can often cause less productivity.

  • Some feel they are now spending more quality time with family.

  • Many are realizing they can move to another city and pay way less in living expenses.

  • Others have realized how much they can get done at home as opposed to being in the office.

  • Others are enjoying the opportunity to take real breaks during the day instead of working through them.

Now I realize you may get a different answer depends upon who you ask, but the facts are that for the first time in a long-time employees have the power to decide based on their needs instead of the needs of the company.

If you have been asked to return to the office and are grappling with the decision to stay, or find another company willing to allow you to work remotely, how do you decide? Especially if you have a family to feed.

But many are finding these jobs, and employers, are working hard to woo back their workforce with raises, the promise to work in the office 2 or 3 days a week, or possibly a bigger benefits package.

Now I’m not saying to quit your job today and start looking for a new one. I’m simply stating what the facts reveal. If you find that this is a decision you are trying to make, maybe you can look at it differently.

  • Figure out what’s most important to you. More money, more time with family, or a new work/life balance.

  • Having that human-to-human interaction and getting back into the workforce. What does this look like for you?

  • What are you willing to give up or compromise on and what are you not willing to give up?

  • Set up regular Energy Medicine sessions to get your head and body in a well-balanced place so you can operate at your best in either scenario. Make Self-Care a priority.

I recommend you write out a list of the things you can’t do without, and another list of things you can compromise on. Then circle the top three or four on each list. This will give you a starting point and an idea of what you find is important to you.

This can be a great way to help find what’s truly important to you when it comes to your job or career. Knowing this is half the battle of finding that work-life balance. The other half is working to put these in place.

Here’s to your work-life balance.
