Beliefs and How Our Brain Protects Us

There are different types of beliefs especially when it comes to our emotional state.

There are times when we are faced with difficult situations and no matter the truths given to us, founded or unfounded, we tend to have a bias to the truth and what this looks like. But before we decide on what’s true or false we need to look at the different types of bias thinking that can cause us to believe in something that may not need a lot of proof.

Let’s look at some of these types to understand the concept.

  1. Confirmation Bias – This is where people favor the information received because they already think or believe it to be true. It’s easier to believe in something you already agree with than something you don’t.

  2. Anchoring Bias – We are given one piece of information over and over, regardless of the truth so that we begin to believe it. They say when something is repeated as truth more than three times, we tend to believe it whether there is proof that it’s false or not. Because we’ve heard it said or noted several times, we tend to believe in it more.

  3. Bandwagon Effect – Is simply that, if everyone believes it to be true it must be, so we hop on the bandwagon and begin to believe in the same thing whether it is right or wrong. This is considered the herd mentality.

  4. Halo Effect – When someone popular or good-looking makes a statement we tend to believe in it more, as our minds tell us it must be true, because good-looking or popular people can’t be wrong….right?

  5. Ostrich Effect – This is when we simply don’t want to see the truth so we hide or put our head in the sand hoping it will just pass because the truth is too much to handle.

Many of these different types of beliefs can cause us to believe in something that may not necessarily be true, even when that truth is backed up with facts. As humans, we tend to believe in the things that are easy for us to understand or agree with no matter whether it's fact or fiction, because the truth may be too hurtful or too real for our minds to digest.

As a whole many of our beliefs are not only based on facts but emotions which can many times cause us to go down life pathways that may be based on falsehoods, because the truth was too difficult to handle.

This happens with traumatic events as well. We need to remember that our brains are wired to protect us from the bad, especially if it’s been a traumatic event. Therefore, many of us may have a very strong belief in something that may not be in our best interest, we simply don’t see it.

So, how do you get past a belief that has been ingrained in your mind but is not serving you well? Such as negative patterns when it comes to relationships or dealing with stress.

Can these patterns be broken and replaced with new ones? Absolutely, but the key is your belief.

How strongly do you want them to change?

Where or who did these beliefs come from? Are you ready for the change? How difficult will it be to make this change?

Even though these questions can be difficult ones to answer, the real reason we change is that we want to. It simply comes down to your will. Are you willing to change?

When you are ready to let go of those beliefs, get in contact with me. I can help you release these beliefs so that you can move in a more positive direction.

Here’s to your mental health.
