“I’ve been working on Zoom for so long, I’m not sure I feel comfortable going back to the office.” Is this what you’re going through? It can be daunting after working from home for a year. Yes, it’s been a year since much of the world shut down. But how do you cope when you are asked to go back to work? Here are few things you may want to consider:
First, take a few deep breaths as this can be similar to starting a brand-new job. Don’t let your nerves get the better of you. Remember, you’ve been doing this job and know what’s expected of you. You’ve got this.
Remember we can only control our own actions. With this in mind, take the precautions you feel are necessary to keep you and your family safe. If this means wearing a mask throughout the day and washing your hands frequently, then do so. But this isn’t a time to blame or get mad at those who chose to do things differently than you.
Expectations may be different when you return. You may find that the offic or workspace you left has changed dramatically. Office space may be farther apart than normal, or there may be shifts to abide by. Just be patient as you and others in charge work to put the best practices in place for everyone involved.
Don’t forget to take time for yourself. When you go home, allow yourself to unwind, as many of you will find this return to the office exhausting, causing fatigue. If you are on a half-day schedule, take a nap in between to re-energize your body.
Notice your energy patterns and those of people around you so you can adjust to the changes we’ve all made unconsciously. You may not realize how being alone so much when working has changed both your ability to concentrate or the new sensitivities to others’ energy patterns that differ from yours. Noticing this (silently to yourself) helps you prevent any unwanted contraction of your own energy field.
Some of us simply don’t want to return and may not have to, while some can’t wait to get back into the office or workplace. Whichever category you fall in, you need to remember that things have changed, and it won’t be the same familiar place you left before COVID. Simply work to not get frustrated, as we all work to figure out what the new work norms will look like.
Here’s to your health.
