Dealing With Pet Anxiety During the Holiday Season

You have your list, you’ve checked it twice, there seems to be no sound but chewing coming from your room, and when you investigate do you find your beloved pet destroying your favorite shoes. Sound familiar?

This time of year is not only stressful for you but can be for your pet as well.

  • While you are out shopping much longer than usual your pet is left at home not knowing when you will return, and their anxiety grows.

  • They feel your anxiety as you go through your list of things to do.

  • They strongly sense changes in your energy, especially stress.

  • They become fearful as your home fills up with family and friends: more people than they are used to and a loss of the routine they may rely upon.

We don’t intend to forget our pets and their needs intentionally, but when you are in overwhelm to get everything checked off your list, go shopping for the upcoming festivities, and deal with managing a house full of people we tend to forget about how this can affect our pets.

  • They become skittish and hide or may lash out being put in a room while the family enjoys dinner.

  • They may start chewing on things when this was never an issue before.

  • You may find accidents not only because of the chaos, but no one was home to let them out.

  • Their mealtime gets off-kilter due to the activities in the home throwing off their system. Or they’re eating more human treats that upset their digestion.

To no fault of their own, their behavior and needs become the casualty of the holiday rush. They have no clue as to your schedule and the slew of people that will be coming over for dinner. All they know is:

  • that dinner is late again,

  • they are being yelled at for peeing on the floor when there was no one to take them out,

  • they don’t understand why chewing on your shoes is a bad thing,

  • they aren’t trying to be in your way, they just don’t understand what’s going on.

I realize that you may have a huge list of things to do, but remember that your pets look to you for guidance, love, and care. By taking the time to keep them on schedule and show them affection will bring in a happier holiday season for all. Invest in some Energy Medicine sessions and Animal communications to let them know what is going and help them understand what is going on.

Here’s to the health of your pets.
