You’re in an elevator when you start to feel the heat rise in your body, you become sweaty, your heart is beating faster than normal, you feel lightheaded, and simply feel sick to your stomach.
Are you having a heart attack?
Is it menopause?
Are you getting sick?
None of the above. This is commonly known as a panic attack.
These tend to show up at the most inappropriate times, causing our symptoms to increase as fear sets in. We can’t explain why we are having a panic attack, or what brought it on. All we know is we want it to go away and soon!
For some it can cause more fear in normal activities, as many times we tend to have the same panic attack where the first one set in: in an elevator, while driving on the freeway, flying in an airplane, getting in a car, walking down a street filled with people. It simply follows us as we equate the location to the panic attack.
We can’t always explain why they happen, but many times it can be an accumulation of incidents or life events that can simply cause us to go into panic mode. But how do we go from panic mode into relaxed mode? How do we counteract the physical effects these attacks can cause? First you need to realize the symptoms:
Heart rate increases
You become sweaty
The heat rises in your body
You feel lightheaded or faint
Your sick to your stomach
Now let’s go into some Energy Medicine techniques to help you combat these physical issues helping you get past panic attacks.
Breathe – Very important to take slow deep breaths. In fact, concentrate on your breathing. Breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out. Do this for a count of at least four. You may need to do this several times before you feel the attack subside.
Find a Distraction – Start counting from 5 to 100. Or, concentrate on a picture that may be hanging on the wall and count the shapes and colors in the picture. This will help distract your mind, allowing you to get past it.
Talk to Yourself – Start a conversation with yourself. Have a peep talk and talk yourself off the edge, “You can get past this. Just breathe.”
Take In Your Surroundings – Identify the smells nearby. Take in the people or cars going by. What color are the buildings or shops?
Soothe Yourself – Put on your headsets and listen to your favorite relaxing music. Meditate. Have a piece of candy and identify the tastes and sensations you feel on your tongue. Have a handkerchief with lavender or peppermint essential oils and breathe in the smell deeply.
By utilizing these simple techniques, anytime you find a panic attack come on, you can help calm your nerves and subside the physical elements that go along with it. However, if you feel you need extra help, give me a call to see how I can help.
