Why Has Your Horse Stopped Listening?

“Why don’t you listen to me?”

Many parents can say the same thing about their children, or their spouse, and in many cases, your horse is not simply your pet, but a being that can be equally difficult at times.

When they stop listening it could be not what’s said, but how it’s said. As with any relationship, you may lose control of the conversation based on your attitude or behavior.

If your horse feels your frustration or confusion, they may simply stop taking your commands to heart and decide to take over the situation and go left instead of right. They may even…

  • Trot instead of walk.

  • Eat instead of move.

In fact, there are many riding novices who have had this very thing happen to them. But certainly not you. You’ve been riding for years.

  • Your beloved horse has listened to every command.

  • Has followed your movements fluidly.

  • Has been the perfect riding companion.

So, what’s suddenly gone awry?

Why are you fighting to get your horse to do simple routines? Why do you feel like you both are out of sync? There could be a few reasons why.

  • Have you been upset lately? Your horse is affected by your emotions, and if you’re upset your horse can reflect them back by becoming upset or agitated as well.

  • Has there been a change in your daily routine? As we are habit-forming creatures so too are our horses. They count on our stability and a routine.

  • Have you brought in a new horse lately? It could be that, just as you may have experienced in school, they have a lot to get used to in their new environment.

Did they have a bad experience lately? This can cause behavioral issues as they may be working through their own fears.

Before you become frustrated with your horse, you need to find out what is behind their new behavior issues.

Pay close attention to what may have changed recently. Once you deduce the possible cause you can start to work on the behavior.

Just be patient as your horse works through their emotions.

In due time, the behavior will start to subside. If not, I always recommend you bring in help. Whether that be a trainer to help you with your gait or a holistic approach to identify the issue.
