Emotional Health for You and Your Pets

CEM April 2020 - Emotional Health You and Pets.jpg

There are several ways to keep your horse happy and healthy, but did you know the number one factor is your own happiness? It’s been proven that if you are unhappy this rubs off on your horse during practice rides, grooming, or simply cleaning the stall. In fact, equines are just as susceptible to emotions as your other pets can be, (i.e., dogs, cats, birds etc.)

As with humans, they can feel our emotional state, whether that be anger, depression, or hurt. They all tend to take on many of the emotional triggers you exhibit. That’s why it’s so important to go through an emotional cleanse before you interact with them. Here are a few tips to help you release those emotions:

  • Find a quiet place to destress.

  • Quiet your mind and body by taking no less than 3 deep breaths while closing your eyes.

  • Work to release all the thoughts in your head.

  • Imagine that the only thing swirling in your mind are big fluffy clouds moving slowly across the sky.

  • Sit for several minutes until both your mind and body have become still.

  • Take another 3 deep breaths and slowly open your eyes.

  • Take the time to enjoy the quiet and stillness of your mind.

Once you have gone through this process you can go about tending to your horse(s). I recommend grooming them as it will not only help to relax them, it will help you to stay calm as well.

I realize that pets do help us destress in many ways, but it’s only fair that we do the same for them. By releasing our stress and emotional baggage of the day, we allow the bond between pet and owner to become a much richer one for all involved.

Here’s to both you and your pet’s health.
