You’ve probably either read or heard much news about the ongoing battle with the recent Coronavirus. But can your horse or pet get this virus as well?
According to The Horse - Your Guide to Equine Health Care, it is feasible. In fact recently they wrote an extensive article on the symptoms and risk factors for you to watch out for: https://thehorse.com/165259/what-is-equine-coronavirus/. Here you can get some key information about the virus itself and symptoms to keep an eye on.
The good news is that statistically only 2 – 6% of horses suspected of infection ultimately test positive for the virus making this a seemingly insignificant condition; however, the number of affected horses identified annually has increased over the past eight years. So, it is still important to stay vigilant and keep a close eye on your horse should they exhibit any of the following symptoms:
Anorexia
Lethargy
Fever (range, 101.5-106°F median, 103.8°F)
Soft, watery feces
Colic
Encephalopathy (circling, head-pressing, seizures)
Should you see any of these symptoms you want to contact your vet right away. But it is best not to panic as they have seen a large recovery rate with equines testing positive.
As with anything, before bringing in a new horse within your fold you want to keep them separate for a couple of weeks in order to not only watch them but give them an opportunity to get acclimated with their new surroundings.
Like with anything, when you take the necessary precautions you can help stave off many issues up front.
Warmly,
Carolyn
