I don’t know about you, but I hear many folks state that they can’t wait until 2020 comes to a close. During this trying year many of us have had to deal with loss:
Of property due to the fires
work and finances
no normalcy
As human beings, we are wired to do well when there’s a routine in place. When this routine is disrupted or simply thrown out the window it can be a huge challenge to cope. Not only trying to make sense of it, but to try and find a new normal. However, how do we do this when so many things are constantly changing on a regular basis? How do we find a routine when it changes from day to day?
Many are grappling with having to juggle with everyone working from home including the kids schooling. How do we handle it all when it seems like a never-ending treadmill of challenges? How can we find the energy to keep ourselves sin balance?
Here are a few ways to cope and gain some since of normalcy.
Let’s break it down into sections to help make it easier to digest and put into place.
Working from Home:
Define a space that works best for you to get as much done as possible.
Set your pace and decide what hours work best for you, if possible.
Know that there will be changes, simply accept this for what it is and work to be flexible.
Include SelfCare Energy: When you take a break — be sure you do, even if you need to set a smartphone alarm with its own special sound so you don’t gorget— set side a few minutes to breathe in a relaxed rhythm so your body can re-energize.
School Time at Home:
Setting up areas with less distractions for kids can really help them concentrate.
Set up a breakfast, snack, and lunch schedule that you all take at the same time.
Have all school supplies needed in each child’s area of learning to cut back on lost time.
Include SelfCare Energy: Experiment with teaching kids how to use calming breaths when they need to, so they cna make them sort fo their daily habits .
Getting Out of The House:
Take some family time and take a walk around the neighborhood.
Take staycations by camping in the backyard.
Do night star gazing with phone apps (Google Sky, Star Tracker, Sky View, Sky Safari)
Have a paint night in the backyard with prizes for the best picture, most creative or most colorful.
Include SelfCare Energy: Take a few minutes at the start of each of these activities for you and your family members to say in one or two words how you feel right now; then do it again at the end of the activity, to honor the benefits you’ve created together.
Now I realize during these times of no normal we must set our own normal. What that looks like is completely up to each of us. Even if the new normal needs to change, as long as many options within your home stay the same you’ve created some normalcy for the whole family.
Here’s to staying healthy.
