During one of the most dangerous fire seasons seen by many states not only do you want to protect your family, but your horse(s) as well. However, many times you have very little time to evacuate.
But if you prepare yourself and your family with some of these key tips you can save precious time.
Don’t wait until the last minute to practice fire safety. Do it now by practicing some of these key steps recommend by the Red Cross: https://www.redcross.org/get-help/how-to-prepare-for-emergencies/types-of-emergencies/fire.html.
Practice getting your horses into and out of your horse trailer to ensure everyone knows what’s expected during an emergency, including your horse.
Note a specific spot for food and buckets you plan to take along for your horse to make it that much easier to get out. You will need at least one bale of hay and bucket of water per horse.
Pull together a first aid kit for both family members and pets.
Ensure you have your paperwork all in one spot for easy access. Such as proof of ownership for your horse(s), microchip information, bill of sale, and insurance papers.
While this can be challenging during any actual emergency, the more calming energy you can consciously bring to your horse the better. Take one or more calming breaths whenever you can think of it, even as your body moves quickly. This will center you, and give your horse the confidence needed to let you lead the way to safety.
The more prepared you are the better. As we’ve seen over these past several weeks and months, fire storms can come on quickly giving very little time to evacuate.
The Red Cross recommends you have a regular fire drill with the family and pets at least once a month. And practice your calming breaths during these drills, so they become part of the new routine you are building.
This way everyone knows what to do, where everything is, and how to get out quickly without confusion.
Here’s to your health.
