When you walk into a pet shelter it can be overwhelming, to say the least. You want to take them all home and give them forever homes. But we all know that unless you have a huge farm, this may not be feasible.
However, when you decide to add a new family member to your fur pack you may start to see some behavior issues. They may not show up right away, but over time you may notice a few things.
Possibly a growl when someone goes near their food bowl.
Cowering when the doorbell rings.
They cry insistently when put into a room by themselves.
These may not mean much up front, but these could be subtle signs of past trauma. After all, we don’t know the history of our shelter pets and they certainly can’t sit down with a cup of tea and share their story. But if we pay attention to these subtle signs, we can help prevent much of these behaviors from becoming a larger issue later down the line. But how?
Here are a few ways you can help make them feel safe and loved, which many times can help them get past their troubled past.
With any pet, you want to be patient and supportive as they get used to their new surroundings.
Creating a safe space for them where they can always retreat can help them feel comforted. This could be a pet bed in their favorite room, a toy, a crate, or even a blanket to ease their anxiety.
Routines can help a pet find stability and help them feel comforted as well. This could consist of regular walks, feedings, potty breaks, playtime, and bedtime at the same time each day.
Treats and praise when they are good or have exhibited good behavior can go a long way.
Setting physical and energetic boundaries for you and them is also helpful and healing.
When you work to provide a safe environment for your pet, you show them from your actions and positive energy how much you care. Trust me, they will return that love and affection times two. Pets are loyal and loving companions and will follow you to the end of the earth if you show them you care.
