How you can show appreciation for those you love.

We tend to take our friends and family for granted because in our minds they will always be there for us. But what we don’t realize is that everyone wants to feel appreciated. Think about it.

Don’t you want to feel like what you do is appreciated? Of course, you do, and this is true for your friends and family as well. The question is how? Sometimes a simple thank you suffices, but many times we don’t even do that.

So, what can you do to really show your friends and loved ones you appreciate them and everything they do? Here are a few ways to do just that— it will make you smile and be a terrific surprise for them:

  1. Take them out for lunch or dinner and tell them in this more conversational setting how much you appreciate all that they do and who they are.

  2. Write them a letter of appreciation and either email it to them, send it through the mail, or give it to them in person.

  3. Give them the best gift of all and listen to what they have to say with no judgement at all, simply be there to listen.

  4. Help them around the house or cook them their favorite meal.

  5. Compliment or thank them, just because, and point out all their best traits.

  6. A hug, kiss on the cheek, or gentle touch to the arm says even more than words and conveys that you care and appreciate them.

  7. Make a list of the top 10 things you love about them and give it to them to see.

  8. Send them a care package of cookies or a handmade card or anything that you made with them in mind.

  9. Leave post-it notes in unexpected places all around the house on how they make your life better, the things they do for you that you cherish, what you love about them the most etc.

When you appreciate the ones around you the universe rewards you with more friends, more love, more flourishing relationships, more positive interactions. Because when you put more positive energy out into the world you get even more in return. Remember to do this with all the people you interact with through your day as well – a thank you, “Good Job”, smile or compliment will go a long way to create better energy between you and them.

One of the good aspects of human nature is to help and feel wanted. This is what appreciation is all about. Helping those you love and making them feel special and wanted in return. Start today with the one who can use your kind words and make a difference in their day and yours.
