What we can learn from seasoned adults.

When you are a kid life is filled with play. When you become a teenager life is filled with friends. When you become an adult life is filled with responsibilities. But when you become a seasoned adult life is filled with all types of experiences.

Many times, you will hear, “The older you get the faster time flies.” Which feels quite true. But how you spend this time or life journey is always the key. Granted, when you were a child and teenager, time seemed to go by much slower. Remember when you were in school and couldn’t wait for the holidays or summer vacation so that you could sleep in and play all day.

But then you became an adult and had bills to pay or a family, household and community who became reliant on you. During this time, you went day to day working and stressing, but playing a lot less. However, when you become a seasoned adult, life takes on new meaning. You start to look at how much longer you may have here with your family, pets, grandkids, friends and your community circles. You may notice yourself starting to slow down more. But you also start to look at things differently.

  • You no longer care about what people think about you.

  • If someone calls you Ma’am or Sir, you simply appreciate the respect.

  • When you see dogs play in the park, it puts a smile on your face.

  • If you become a grandparent, you don’t usually have to worry about their rearing, that’s up to your kids to take on. You simply get to be grandma or grandpa, or an honorary aunt or Uncle to friends’ kids, and you get to spoil them.

  • You travel more because you have more time.

  • You finally get to focus on what you want to do or experience. You may even feel the energy growing for new projects of hobbies that surprise you.

However, for those coming into the seasoned years they may be wondering if they can or want to retire. Or what that really even looks like. Some may still work part-time to keep themselves busy while others may volunteer their time to help others, stay energized, and be engaged in life. But when you get to this seasoned age you start to ask yourself different questions and you start to wonder, is this all there is? You start to look at your spiritual life and search for more existential answers to life? Have you attained all the dreams you had when you were younger? Have you lived a full life?

Many will ask, “What is your legacy?” But when you look more closely at this question, your legacy is really your life story. You lived it like no one else. You experienced things that most have not. You’ve seen how the world has changed since you were young. But you have your story. Why not tell it? Put it down on paper for those around you to read. We all have something to give back— why not give back with your unique story of life.

If you truly want to learn about life, ask a seasoned adult. They’ve been through life. They’ve seen it, lived it, and conquered it. Much can be learned if all we do is listen.

Here’s to the seasoned adults and their stories.
