When you see this term, filling your bucket or keeping it from getting kicked over by others, it’s essentially a visual way of protecting your feelings, emotional state and personal energy. It’s a visually symbolic way of protecting yourself from others’ emotional baggage or insecurities. So, how does this work?
Imagine you have a bucket and each time someone says something nice to you, that makes you happy, feel confident, secure, and calm, your bucket is getting filled with positivity. Positive emotions, positive feelings, and a positive mindset.
Now imagine if someone is upsetting you, making you feel less than others, making you unhappy, and belittling you is when your bucket starts to become depleted by all the negativities.
As you may or may not know, negativity negates positivity and positivity heals negativity. Imagine this bucket resting in your head— how full or empty it is will be based on your emotional state. Now imagine a fortified bucket where very little, if any, negative comments, emotions, or feelings take away from your bucket. This is when:
You feel your best.
You feel empowered.
It can replenish itself easily.
You feel confident in your abilities and yourself.
You are better prepared to take on any issue or challenge that may come your way.
Now keep in mind that it will be up to you to fill your bucket by being with the people who make you feel happy and not allowing those who are continually negative to spend time with you. But as we know, that’s not always possible. Yet there are things you can put in place to help you stave off the negativity and not allow it to affect your emotional energy bucket. Here are a few to get you started.
Write all the negativity that comes to mind on a piece of paper and then shred it. This will allow you to let go.
Send that person who is taking up space in your mind’s bucket some love and light and trust they can receive that.
Journal how you felt when you started a new page, and follow that with how you want to feel now.
When you are with that challenging person, simply say no when they become negative. Tell them you want your day filled with positive emotions and results, so you are saying no to any negativity.
Imagine a locked lid on your bucket where no negativity can affect it. This can sometimes help you to push negativity away as well.
Whatever way you work to protect your bucket, it’s important that you recognize how you feel, and ensure you protect your emotions from those who try to kick over your bucket until it’s empty. This is where a strong emotional Wei Qi (a blog to come explaining this term) protective barrier around you can keep out all the negativity and angst.
Many times, others who are insecure in themselves tend to trample over others to make themselves feel better. Recognize they are not aware of what they may be doing, but you do not have to engage in their drama. Knowing this can help you to deal with these insecurities while protecting yourself as well.
