Granted, we don’t expect our pets to answer us or tell us in words how they feel. However, maybe they are trying to do exactly that, and we are just not reading them in their language. You can work to be a better communicator and listener to help your pet and you have a much more rewarding relationship. There are several ways you can communicate with your pets, and it's a matter of knowing how.
Here are a few key ways to help you communicate in a way that you both can get better results.
Body language - This is one of the best ways to get a point across to your pet. Your pet will pay more attention to your body language than even your voice. This can mean a wave of the hand, hands on your hip, or a cock of your head, as well as your many facial expressions.
Energy – yours and theirs – Animals are excellent at reading our energy, so much so that they know what we are thinking and feeling before we do. We are often projecting this without realizing it, and that is the energy they are picking up. It may be invisible to us, but not to them!
The tone in your voice - Can say a lot to your pet. They can figure out if you are angry, happy, or sad based on the inflection in your voice. This also relates to the energy you are projecting.
Using certain commands - This can be helpful as well, as long as you are consistent. Such as “Stop barking”, “Down”, “Sit”, and “Stay”. With many of these commands, you want to utilize a combination of voice inflection, body language, and the unique and clear command word.
As with humans, our pets react to many of the same social cues. When we yell, they can become fearful and confused, as opposed to using a calm and stern voice, which helps them stay calm. Rubbing their nose in pee after the fact confuses them and they don’t understand. It’s very counterproductive and creates distrust between you and them. Being patient, calm, and consistent in your training will be more productive.
Remember, your pet will react based on your attitude and energy as well. You don’t want to start any interaction when you are angry. Simply take a few deep breaths and react with a stern but gentle voice. After all, how would you react if you were getting yelled at, or hit when you don’t even know what you did wrong? Are you going to stick around? Well, don’t expect your pet to either.
Being a pet owner naturally builds and strengthens patience, love, and understanding. This is when you truly get results. However, if you find that you may need help along the way you may want to consider our Chiron Mirror Sessions. It can help you both understand where these feelings and behaviors are coming from.
