As with children, we all learn with the repetition of words and actions. The same is true for our pets. For example, when you go to the vet, have you noticed how differently your pet reacts as opposed to going to the park? Their memories are like ours where they recognize things along the way such as passing the gas station or the school along the path to the vet.
Much of this also rings true with our actions. Even though our pets may not be able to tell time, they can tell by the way shadows form on the walls at a certain time of the day, it’s time for dinner. They are also able to pick up our thoughts and feelings, so be honest with them! Even though we love them to the moon and back, I don’t believe we give them credit for how smart our pets truly are.
When you keep your pets on a schedule, such as:
A walk in the morning
Eat breakfast
Humans go to work
Time for humans to come home
Dinner time
After dinner walk
Our schedule sets them up for what to expect from us. There are tell-tale signs they see when these things happen.
Is it dark our light outside when we go walking?
What shadows are cast on the walls when my humans come home?
What mood is my human in?
They recognize your car or your suitcase and all that this means.
Should I snuggle because I see they need some love? (Pets can read our energy and our faces quite well.)
There’s someone at the door that I don’t recognize. Is this friend or foe?
We certainly can’t get into their minds, but the simple act of a routine and the repetition of this routine helps them know exactly what time it is and how they should react. Not only does this help our beloved pets know what to expect, but it also keeps them calm and centered when everything works in tandem.
Many times, when we disrupt this routine, we see behavior issues start to rise which can be dealt with once either the same routine has kicked in or a new one has been established. As it takes us time to adjust to any new routine, so too will it take time for our pets to adjust. However, repetition can be the best way to keep your pets calm and feel comforted as it does for you.
Remember whether we are training, establishing a pattern, or they are training us, be patient and consistent, and be clear about what you expect from them!
Here’s to enriching your pet relationship with repetition.
