When the political forums become too unbearable for most, we put our hands up in the air, and stated, “I’m done.” However, each day we are thrown a new News story that puts us in the same state of mind, “I’m done with all of the bad News.” So, let me ask you this question, “Why do you continue to watch?”
I get it:
“I want to stay informed.”
“I want to ensure I can prepare for the worst before it gets here.”
“So, I can plan accordingly.”
All good points, but let me ask you this, “When was the last time you watched a heartfelt positive story on the News?” Most likely you may be trying to come up with one and can’t. Why? Because happy News does not sell. Because positive life-warming events do not sell.
Unfortunately, given the choice, whether conscious or unconscious, human beings will choose the negative story.
Why? Because we are geared to protect and react to fearful events. Protect our loved ones, protect our pets, protect ourselves and these News stories are tapping into the part of our brain known as the flight or fight stress mode. And in some, it becomes an obsession to protect, which is why you watch.
Now, how can you get information without getting sucked into the rabbit hole of negativity? Here are a few ways to get the information you need while keeping a positive life attitude.
Limit your News intake time to only 30 minutes a week. You can keep to this motto by setting a timer.
Try different sources such as News apps where you can get a quick view of everything such as Flipboard, Feedly, Google News, or News360.
Surveys have shown that more than half of the population says watching the News causes them stress, anxiety, and lack of sleep. However, you can still stay informed without it overwhelming your days and nights by following some of these key tips:
Journal or write down everything you took in to release it onto the paper and out of your mind.
Let your mind let go: by meditating between 30 minutes to an hour after consuming the News. Allow your mind to become completely blank by concentrating on your breathing. Breathe in and breathe out, breathe in and breathe out.
Get out and do something physical – walk, run, dance, call a friend, etc.
Start writing down all the positive things in your life.
These simple things will help you and your mind to let go, move on, and allow yourself to let go of the negativity.
