Are you asking the right questions?

How to find a good vet, groomer, therapist, or doctor….no matter what type of service you are looking for: The number one thing to keep in mind is, are you asking the right questions?

And how do you know it’s the right question to ask? But before we go there, maybe we should discuss the why.

  • We have no problems asking questions of our friends or family, but why is it so difficult for us to question our doctor when we are told to have a blood or medical test?

  • Why don’t we ask questions of the mechanic when they say we need to replace this or that?

  • Why don’t we ask questions when a coach tells us we need to buy this or do that?

Many times, it’s because we trust in the person we are dealing with. We believe in their knowledge so we simply trust that they will steer us in the right direction. But how do we really know about these service-based businesses? Especially when we simply started utilizing their service because a friend or family member recommended them.

With this said, how do you decide this service is the right one for you? You ask the right questions. But how do you know you are asking the right questions in the first place? If you break it down to the why you realize that people ask questions to either get more information or fill in the gaps.

However, we also need to be conscious of the fact that maybe we should ask more questions. If the doctor recommends we have a medical test, ask why this test is necessary. What is the doctor hoping to gain from this test? How will this help you get better or keep you on the path to health? This is the same with any service-based business you deal with.

Whatever the service-based business is you want to ask the right questions. But you also want to ask the question in a way so that you get answers to help you make a vested decision on whether to do business with them or move forward with their recommendations.

There are four key tips for asking the question:

  1. You want to ensure your question is based on one specific topic to get the information you need to help quell your concern(s).

  2. When asking your question, you want to base it on facts you want to know not on emotions you are feeling.

  3. Most importantly you want to sit back and listen to the answer. If the answer helps to either fill in the gaps or make you feel better about the outcome, then you’ve asked the right question.

  4. If you still are not getting the facts needed to make your decision, try asking the question differently.

Remember, when you ask questions, it is not to cause animosity; it’s simply a fact-finding mission. Once you have all the facts in front of you, you can truly make the best decision to move forward. We should all be asking questions along the way, as it helps us better understand likely outcomes.

Here’s to asking the right questions.
