You’ve decided to give a shelter pet a forever home, but how do you prepare for your new pet and help them get acclimated to their new home, especially if you have other pets?
Before you head to the shelter ensure you’ve done your homework.
What size pet are you looking for?
Are you looking for a puppy, junior, or senior pet?
Should they already be potty trained or are you willing to potty train them on your own?
Will they get along with your other pets?
How will they get along with the kids?
Now before you head off to the shelter there are a few other things you want to watch out for before you make your decision. (Note: Many of these considerations can apply in similar ways to kittens or cats, too.)
You want to take your time when deciding on a pet.
Look at their behavior when you walk by the cage, are they fearful and in a corner, are they playful, or barking uncomfortably? These are all signs of the dog and how they handle stress.
Pay close attention to the card the shelter provides. Do they have a name? What’s their temperament? Are they a one-dog family or do they get along with others?
Watch how the dog reacts when walking through the shelter with a leash.
How is the dog reacting to your kids?
If you can, you want to bring your other pets along to see how they get along.
You want to make the best decision you can upfront without having to return them to the shelter as this can cause more anxiety and stress for the dog. But most importantly you want to ensure you have made the right decision for your family as a whole.

You can also gain knowledge about how energy medicine and intuitive messages can help us recognize and adjust to changes that are affecting us, as well as our animals with many of our programs. Even when we may not recognize it— there are messages your dogs, cats, horses and other pets wish they could tell you directly—as they seek to give you loving help.
