Did you know that coyotes are an integral part of our environment?
In several indigenous traditions, they are known as the Trickster. Coyotes are considered a symbol of the twists and turns that life can bring to us through unexpected challenges and reminders that the joke is often on us. Coyote energy serves a purpose in keeping us respectful of nature’s powers, the importance of keeping our egos in check with others, and signal that our energy may need rebalancing.
In the modern everyday world where people have built up communities that overtake coyotes’ natural habitats, we encounter them unexpectedly, night or day. It’s fairly common to encounter them even in complex cities-of-suburbs like Los Angeles. In such circumstances, it is easy to overlook their symbolism, and focus on the most mundane reputation that they have in daily life.
In fact, many pet owners absolutely despise them. Why? Because they look at them as a threat to their beloved pets. We know it’s important to keep our domesticated animals safe, such as taking practical precautions when walking on less citified trails, for example.
But have we judged coyotes wrongly? As in all areas of life, it is all about perspective and the bigger picture. We are all one and interconnected in ways we have mostly forgotten. Keep that in mind as we go on.
Let’s look at the coyote and how they help rid us of many other wild pests that we all deal with as homeowners and gardeners:
Wild Rabbits = Yes, they look cute, but they wreak havoc on a garden or that new lawn you’ve spent hours toiling only to find them obliterated by those cute little bunnies foraging everywhere in your neighborhood.
Ground Squirrels, gofers, or moles = You just had a new lawn put in only to find hole after hole. No matter what you do, your lawn looks like Swiss cheese.
Urbanized Mice and rats = You go to get some crackers or tasty chips out of your kitchen cabinets, only to find two eyes, whiskers, and a long tail staring back at you, or chewed holes in those sealed packages or containers. Mice and rats can get into holes the size of a quarter and eat their way through your cupboards and pantry.
All of the above are the main food source for coyotes, who have a natural predator’s role and help us to keep our homes, gardens, lawns, cellars, storage sheds or cupboards pest free. Now most of the reasons coyotes may be attacking or going after your pets are for the following reasons:
Bird feeders bring in mice/rats which bring in the coyotes.
Green grass brings in wild rabbits which bring in the coyotes.
Pets being left outside, especially the smaller ones, bring in the coyotes.
Their food and water sources have diminished due to climate changes, and they are looking for nourishment to survive.
Like any other wild animal, Coyotes look for the easiest food source possible. But can we truly judge the coyote when we are many times making our pets easy prey for them? After all, we are the ones who moved into the areas they use to call their own. We are the ones building homes farther and farther up the hill. Yet, we judge these animals based on the habits they’ve formed to ultimately survive.
With this said, are you doing the same thing with your energy in life? Are you leading a life based on decisions made on judgment instead of facts? Are you basing your decisions on information that is not from the source but second-hand?
When we judge people, we tend to do so based on second-hand information or biased context. However, when we do our homework and get all the facts laid out before us can we truly make a decision that works best for our lives and those around us. Many of us take people’s word before doing our due diligence on mechanics, doctors, or dentists.
This comes back to what I mentioned above - Open your eyes and your awareness to see the bigger picture and also trusting yourself to look beyond what you’re told. This is where trusting your intuition and following your own guidance will assist you in making the best decisions for you.
You will begin to balance your energy as a regular rhythm for wellbeing. By simply doing your homework with anything in which you plan to invest time, money, and effort you will find more balance in your life, because these decisions will be made with your eyes open and in awareness.
As with the coyote, if we learn to understand why we can coexist for a more balanced life.
Here’s to a balanced life.
