How do you get yourself out of dread into joy for the holiday season?

When the holidays start to approach many of us may go into hiding.

  • Hiding away from family.

  • Hiding away from feelings.

  • Hiding away from the world.

However, this doesn’t make the holidays go away nor does it truly make you feel any better. It simply causes depression and negative thoughts to enter your mind as you sit by yourself stewing on,

  • being alone,

  • hating or fearing your family,

  • dealing with a breakup,

  • feeling unworthy.

It seems that when the holidays hit, many people retreat into their cocoons, trying not to come back out until spring. But this is no way to live your life, and it certainly isn’t healthy for your mind, body, or emotions. But how do you get out of your head or heavy heart, when all you see around you is others having what looks like an easy time filled with joy, love, and togetherness?

Here are a few tips that can help you experience the holidays with a lot less dread and negativity.

  • One of the best ways to get out of your funk right away, without needing to prepare, is to be active. Go for a walk, do some stretching exercises, check out an exercise video on YouTube, or go up and down your stairs.

  • Share your feelings with someone you trust. If this isn’t feasible then write it down. This allows you to release those feelings you’ve been hanging onto.

  • Consider volunteering your time at a shelter or soup kitchen. When you help others it can make you feel much better.

  • Meditate to clear your mind and emotions. Find a quiet place, concentrate on breathing in and out, let your mind go completely blank, and let go.

  • Keep your energy clean and positive. Focus on the experience you want, not on what think will happen because it always does. Be in the present and in your heart. This allows others to change as well.

I realize that this can take time to put into practice to build healing habits, but the sooner you start the less time you spend beating yourself up and feeling blue. You deserve better. You deserve a holiday filled with laughter and joy. But it’s up to you to take the actions to get there.
