Fear itself is a mindset of something that has not happened yet. Much of the fear you experience in life is based on the fear others have instilled in you. Even though our parents mean well, what are the things they say most:
“Don’t go there it’s too dangerous.”
“Don’t do that you’ll get hurt.”
Even though they are trying to protect you, unwittingly they are also putting fear into your mind. Now, most of the time you listen because no one wants to get hurt.
But how do you tell the difference between fear of the unknown or something that can physically hurt you? Sometimes the fear of the unknown can cause many of the symptoms real fear provokes, because we truly believe in this fear, whether it’s real or not.
Fear usually ties into all your senses. The hair on your arms may begin to stand on end. You get goosebumps and that feeling of dread begins to settle in your gut. Your palms become clammy and all you want to do is run. However, this could also happen if you are getting ready to do a speech and you are petrified about getting on that stage. Or you start driving for the first time and panic that you’ll crash—instead simply pull over and say, “Driving lesson done for now,” as you let your inner alarm bells calm down. As you can see, fear is brought on by the unknown of what might happen.
What if my speech bombs and I’m laughed out of the auditorium?
What if I start driving and someone pulls in front of me, and I can’t stop in time?
These are all fears based on “what if.” It hasn’t happened yet, but our minds start to ponder and magnify the worst-case scenarios. This of course is when our instincts contract our energy (literally, since many feel knots in their stomach) and our senses go on high alert. But how do you tell the difference between something real as opposed to what your mind is telling you is real? This is a good question but can only truly be answered by asking yourself some of these questions first:
If I put my fears aside and move forward— what’s the worst that can happen?
Will this cause me or anyone else bodily harm?
How risky is this?
Will I lose everything I have?
Is this fear real or simply holding me back?
You may tend to let your mind run wild with all the scenarios; but in reality, are you putting things there that aren’t real dangers? When you think about danger, 3 things may come to mind:
What if I get hurt physically, never recoup, or die?
What if I lose everything and have to live on the streets?
What if my family gets hurt?
These are the main reasons we don’t do things. They are usually major exaggerations and fears of danger that overtake our minds and emotions. But when you are fearful of a new job or taking on a new client, or going to a new destination, do these fears really apply— or are they simply because you are fearful of the unknown? Of course, this will depend on you.
So how do you make decisions and put irrational, exaggerated fear aside? Here are some key techniques to help:
Write out a list of all the things that could go wrong.
Now ask yourself if anyone will get hurt or die if you do this.
Now it’s time to write down why this decision is scaring you.
Write down what would happen if you did do it and nothing bad happened. How would that look?
By going through the above process, you can start to see why the decision or action is fearful for you. Usually, when you see the worst thing that could happen, it helps you put it into perspective, and you can see why this fear is stopping you from deciding to move forward. When you truly look at it this way can you figure out whether this is truly a dangerous proposition or simply your fear of change. You give your energy time to calm and return to a balanced state. Now it’s up to you whether you allow your fears to hold you back or figure out why those fears are there.
The suggested list above helps you focus on ways that energy medicine helps you learn how to work constructively with fear. When you do this can you truly address your fears and learn to overcome and transform them. If you want support to add this approach to your life, I’m here.
Here's to a fearless life.
