Dealing With the Holiday “Let Down” After the Season has Ended

During the holidays you may have enjoyed family, friends, food, the lights, the festivities, or simply the meaning behind what the holidays are to you. But many tend to get blue or feel let down when everything is put away and life starts up again. Why do you think this is?

Statistics state that there is always a period of time considered the “let down” shortly after the holiday seasons end.

Much of this is due to all the work we put into our holidays: on the constant go, gearing up for the festivities. When this all ends, we feel a sense of loss as we fall into our old routines. These times brought in new adventures and temporary routines helping to shake things up a bit and when we return to our regular lives, we tend to feel “let down”.  In some cases, it’s the one time of year we see family and friends that we don’t normally get to do during the rest of the year. Many find themselves feeling blue or disjointed.

If you find yourself going through the same letdown, how do you deal with it so that you can move forward in a positive way?

  • For some, it’s a matter of getting into your routine as quickly as possible. This can help you concentrate on other things allowing you to move past the letdown at a much quicker pace. Some of these tips can help you get back on track quickly.

    • Work on your calendar for the coming year.

    • Send off letters thanking friends/loved ones for spending the holidays with you and about how much the time you spent together meant to you.

    • Clean out the closets and donate them to good causes.

    • Get back into your bedtime routine by starting to wind down earlier in the evening allowing your mind and body to relax beforehand for a deeper night of sleep.

    • Make time - even 15 minutes during your day - for a scheduled Self-Care break: an appointment with yourself that becomes a healthy new feature of your routine.

    • Get an energy tune-up and support to clean out what is no longer needed physically or emotionally.

The more you work on filling your day and including time for Self-Care, the easier it can be to move forward.

  • For some, it may be a matter of taking the time to simply relax and take some time off. This can help you to decompress and reboot. Here are some tips to help you ease into your routine.

    • Take some time to get a much-needed massage to help give both your mind/body the opportunity to let go of all the hustle and bustle that is brought on from previous holiday events.

    • Tune into your energy, physically, emotionally, and mentally to see where you need to make some adjustments and what you need to release. Make room so you can start creating the new year.

    • Take some time to quiet your mind with some deep breathing and meditation.

    • Re-energize your mind with a good book allowing your mind to be immersed into the story. Or pick up a self-help book to help you implement some new habits.

    • Journaling can also help you capture all the memories you made during the holidays and release those you want to let go of.

Of course, it’s up to you to decide which ones work best for you as you work to release the anxiety of the past holidays and move into a better routine for you and your family.

Here’s to your health/wellbeing.
