If We Know Negative Thoughts Are Bad for Us, Why Do We Allow Them In?

This is a question many have had to grapple with since the beginning of time however, there are very simple ways to avoid negative thoughts altogether. The hardest part is, changing our thought patterns.

Have you ever heard of the analogy, if someone is happy, they tend to tell 10 – 15 people? But on the other side of this coin, those who are unhappy tend to tell 30 – 50 people. Why? You would think that those who are happy would be willing to tell the whole world, yet it’s the opposite.

Science tells us that our minds tend to concentrate on the negative more than the positive because they have bigger impacts on our lives. Since we hardwired this way, how do you get past the negative thoughts so that you can live a more positive life?

Here are a few tips that may help you do just that.

  • When you find yourself in a negative situation look at the good that came of it.

  • Stop taking things peoples say personally. Most of what they say is not because of you, but another situation they have pushed onto you.

  • Question the negative thought. “Is this serving me well? Should I take this seriously or simply let it go?”

  • Work to replace the negativity in your life. Whether that be friends, colleagues, or situations that aren’t good for you and your mindset.

  • Stop making more out of something that may be so small in the scheme of things. We tend to make mountains out of molehills. Maybe it’s time to simply step over it and move on.

  • Focus on replacing the negative thought with a thought that makes you feel happy.

  • Go for a walk to regroup and let go.

  • Bring positivity to those around you. Be kind, compliment someone, help where you can. By helping others, you let go of the negativity.

  • Start your day with positive habits: meditation, journaling, mantras, visioning your wants. By doing this every morning you positively start your day helping you negate the negative that may creep in.

As with anything, habits take time to establish but these good habits can increase your mood levels, finances, relationships, and opportunities because negative thoughts muddy our minds not allowing us to see the possibilities. 

Allow yourself to live well by changing your negative thought to positive thoughts. Simple concept, you simply have to ask yourself, “Do I want to live a life of fulfillment or not.” It’s really simple.
