Many across the states are experiencing high heat like never before.
Triple-digit numbers rising in areas that are not used to this type of heat can be very challenging. But how do you keep yourself and your pets cool during triple-digit heatwaves?
Here are a few tips that might help:
Check your area for cooling stations that accept pets. Many are allowing folks to stay the night until the heat subsides.
Apply towels soaked in cool water on the belly, back of the neck, head, and ears. Keep a fan nearby as it can help cool your pets down. You can do this method for both you and your pet to stay cool.
Even though I shouldn’t have to say this, never leave any pets or children in hot cars.
Keep your exercise to a bare minimum or do it during the early morning hours when the temperatures are much cooler.
Don’t leave your pets in homes that have no air conditioner. Remember, they have more fur than you do and can get hot quickly.
Another way to keep your pets safe is to be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion. Watch out for the following symptoms.
Panting
Vomiting
Warm and dry skin
Rapid heartbeat
Staring or anxious expressions
Collapsing
Unresponsive to your touch or voice
If you find your pet is exhibiting any of the above symptoms, ensure you get them to your vet as soon as possible. You also want to prepare for power outages as this weather tends to tax the electrical grid causing many blackouts. Keep some bags of ice in some coolers if you find your area is experiencing rolling blackouts.
We can’t control the weather, but we can certainly do everything in our power to stay cool. Here are some resources to help you find some cooling stations in your area:
Check your local city websites.
Check your local news stations.
Stay cool as we all work to keep the heat at bay.
Here’s to your health,
