When the holiday approaches do you find yourself getting giddy with glee or becoming very fearful of everything the holidays bring?
In most cases, many look forward to this holiday with the anticipation of:
The lights and festivities
The Holiday musical events
The food and family gatherings
The anticipation of giving to those you love
Then there is another group of folks who look to this holiday with fear and dread with the anticipation of:
Family squabbles
The lack of money compounded twice fold
The feeling of dread at the thought of spending a holiday alone again
Worry that you won’t have enough energy to lift your own spirits
Even though everyone may not see eye to eye on what the holidays bring for those around you, it can still be a time for us all to look at life through new eyes. I realize that this time of year can bring much loneliness and dread for many, but it doesn’t have to.
YOU can choose to be enlightened by these days or not, it’s simply a matter of how you look at these days altogether. Instead of viewing it all through dirty colored glasses you can clean those glasses and see them in a whole new light. How? By looking at it differently.
Instead of looking at being alone look around you and see the people right in front of you. Your neighbors, colleagues, old friends, and family. Imagine the slate has been wiped clean and you now see these folks differently. Concentrate on only the good things you see even if that means you simply like their laugh.
Don’t look at this day as a day that means your bank account is low and you have no money to buy gifts. Instead, give the gift of your time and caring. Help those around you in need by going through your old clothes and giving them to someone who can use them. Making homemade cards with a sentiment of love or friendship instead of worrying about going broke to buy gifts. Bake some holiday goodies or a meal for those in need. Or find ways to make inexpensive gifts with the help of YouTube videos.
Instead of worrying about what you don’t have write a list of what you do have. A roof over your head, food in your cupboards, a job, money in the bank (even if it’s only $5.00). By concentrating on what you already have takes you away from the mindset of what you don’t have.
Stay away from social media and watch holiday movies that make you feel good and put a smile on your face. Nurturing your own energy for holiday health is well worth your focus.
This particular holiday season is not about the gifts, or how much you spent on your family, or the hustle and bustle of getting out of town or trying to one-up your aunt who buys everyone a gift regardless of the one gift rule.
It’s about appreciating what you have in your life as well as the people who have touched your life in profound ways. It’s about helping others in need. This is the true gift of the holiday bringing you cheer instead of fear.
