Have you ever thought about becoming a foster parent for many furry friends in need of a home? Fostering a pet can be a very rewarding endeavor, but just like with anything you have to go into it with open eyes. If this is something you’ve thought about, you may want to think about the following things:

  • Find a good fit – Every dog/cat have their perks and downside. You want to look at your current environment and see what type of foster care you can take on. For example: If you have a smaller house, you may want to foster smaller dogs.

  • How much effort are you willing to put into this? – Your new foster will need walking or may need socializing skills. You want to make sure you have the means to meet the foster pet’s needs.

  • What type of transportation do you have? – Many times, foster pets need to be shuttled to various locations for people to view and fall in love with a potential permanent home. You will need to have ample transportation to bring your foster pet to these locations.

You also want to find a place that needs foster parents to help these pets find a temporary home until they are adopted. I recommend you check out this resource PetFinder.com to find a foster organization in your area.

Once you’ve found an organization you want to ask the right questions to find out as much as possible about your new foster pet and the care they will need:

  • History of the pet.

  • Health and health issues if any.

  • Behavior issues if any.

  • Basic needs to care for this pet based on their circumstances.

  • Your commitment and communication venues and who to contact if need be.

By simply being fully prepared it allows you to care for your new foster pet in the best way possible for everyone involved. Don’t be surprised if you fall in love with your foster pet and end up adopting them yourself. However, there are many pets in need of a foster home, and you may be the perfect fit for that pet in need.

Here’s to your pet's health.
