Getting Past Depression

We all go through this at one time or another. Life throws you a curve ball and now your mind is spinning out of control with damaging thoughts and patterns. It can be as hard as trying to quit smoking, but it is feasible.

There are some simple techniques you can do today to help you get out of the rut and back into a mindset routine that serves you in a much better way. Depression can be a slippery slope and can be difficult to overcome, especially if your thoughts are spiraling out of control.

I want to help and ask that you give these simple techniques a try. I mean a real try, not half hearted or giving up before you even start, because it’s important for you to get back on track. It is important for your family, kids, friends, colleagues. No one wants to see someone suffer from depression. But this is about you and getting better.

Before we begin, I want you to make this promise to yourself and repeat it to yourself out loud:

“I will make every effort to do these techniques. I promise to not give up quickly. I promise to do them with all my heart because I’M WORTH IT.”

Here we go:

1. Breathe – May be simple, but many times by simply taking 3 deep breaths we release much of the anxiety building up in our bodies. Take 3 deep breathes each time you feel down and at a low point.

2. Music – Find the type of music that lifts your spirit and makes you feel great inside. Take the time to close your eyes and listen.

3. Change Your Routine – Routines can cause us to get in a rut or feel uninspired. I recommend you change things up. Try a class on drawing, go for a walk, or simply go outside and listen to all the sounds of nature.

4. Write It Down – Get all of the bad thoughts out of your head and write it down on a piece of paper. But here’s the caveat: you have to trash it once you are done, never to be seen again. This will allow you to set the thought free, and get it out of your head and heart.

5. Find Someone Who Will Simply Listen – This may be a hard find, but it is important to find someone willing to simply listen to you talk. But I recommend you set rules up front. State that you are not looking for advice, just a sounding board to listen and let you talk.

If all else fails, I recommend you find someone in the therapeutic industry that can help you even further.

But I believe in you and know that you can do this.

Warmly,

Carolyn
