The Crane and What They Can Teach Us
When you think of the crane, most envision a large white bird with long legs either plucking fish out of local lakes or water holes, or in the farming fields. Either way the crane seems to be stepping with care while on the ground, but as soon as they take flight, they look absolutely regal. The gracefulness of the crane is many times a dance between earth and sky. There are many spiritual symbolisms the crane represents and characteristics that we can all learn from to enhance our daily lives. Let’s begin with the various symbolisms these birds hold.
1. The Native American Tribes Believe Cranes Are Messengers of Wisdom. Representing new beginnings, change, and transformation. They believe these birds are messengers, bringing guidance and wisdom to those who seek it. Many of the Native Americans often incorporate them into art and ceremonies.
2. Eastern Traditions Believe the Crane Represents Longevity and Honor.
If you have traveled across the globe, you may notice cranes in ancient paintings and literature. The eastern tradition considered the crane to be auspicious, promising good fortune and brighter futures.
Christian Symbolism Believes the Crane Represents Resurrection and Immortality
Legends believe that cranes live for over a thousand years, even stretching their existence as long as three thousand years! Their ability to soar high, defying gravity, mirrors the spiritual elevation.Celtic Traditions Believe the Cranes Are Majestic Guardians
They believe these majestic birds hold ancient secrets guarding hidden wellsprings of wisdom or stand sentinel at the crossroads of fate. In Celtic lore, they are the gatekeepers to realms beyond our sight.Japanese Culture Believes the Crane Represents Happiness, Creativity, and Loyalty
Many times you will find crane origamis with their wings unfolding like wishes.Modern Cultures Believe the Crane Represents a Focus, Clarity, and an Integration of all the above. We are more than individual tribes, and a greater whole.
When you see a crane what comes to mind for you? As with any creature in the wild, you can learn much based on their habitats and how they exist amongst the other creatures in the wild and/or cities. The cranes are known for:
Graceful Adaptability: As they thrive in diverse environments.
Loyalty and Partnership: Cranes remain loyal to their partners for life.
Resilient Migration: Did you know that the Whooping Crane embarks on an epic journey from Canada to Texas? This is a 2,500-mile migration. Their young learn this path from their elders.
Patience and Deliberation: The crane has elongated legs, neck, and beak and moves with purpose, step by step.
Grounded Wisdom: Cranes have a unique anatomy with long legs for walking and wading, and a pointed beak for probing the mud for food. Yet they stay grounded as they reach for this food.
Focus: Cranes have a focus and intensity that allows them to accomplish their goals for food and survival.
From the spiritual symbolism and characteristics of the crane you can learn to do things differently in your life to help you achieve your goals and dreams as well. Here are just a few you may consider for yourself.
Adaptability – As with the crane, you can learn to adapt gracefully to life’s changing landscapes. Whether this be a new job, moving to a new city or state, or dealing with personal challenges, embracing change and practicing resilience can help you adapt.
Loyalty – As humans, our relationships and commitment matters. Whether this be with a friend, family member, or partner, when you stand by someone through thick and thin you create a lasting bond of loyalty.
Resilience – When you embrace growth and learn from the changes that this growth brings, you walk a path of wisdom. The resilience to stay the course during growth and change is a key element of life.
Patience – Many times our fast-paced world doesn’t allow for much patience. But when you practice being patient with others you take one graceful step at a time to lead a lifetime of achievement.
Grounded – Being spiritually grounded or grounded to the earth can help you stay the course. When you experience the simplest of moments you can find profound insights. Grounding yourself allows you to see more clearly and gain wisdom from the everyday experiences you encounter.
Energy – Your energy is the glue that enables you to integrate and incorporate the above skills. Your energy or essence is the core of who you are, and the source of your true power.
As you can see, the crane can teach you much about life allowing you to achieve so much more when you become grounded, adapt well to change, and practice patience along the way. May you go through life with as much grace as the crane.
