When you get a puppy or a shelter dog that’s only a couple of years old, you assume they will be here for a long while. That you will have many years of love and time with your beloved pet. However, due to many factors our pets are living shorter lives than they used to. This is due to many factors:
Environmental changes.
Dog Food ingredients that are many times fillers instead of healthy ingredients.
Breeding practices.
Genetic disorders with inbreeding.
Much more stress and anxiety that can cause illness.
Granted there are ways to increase the longevity of your pet’s life, but we all must realize that we will most likely outlive our pets. When you look at the average age of cats, dogs, and horses you can see each one varies:
Dogs’ average lifespan is around 10 – 15 years.
A cat’s average lifespan is around 12 – 20 years.
Horses’ average lifespan is around 25 – 30 years.
Pet birds’ average lifespan is around 10-50 years.
Considering that the average lifespan of a human is roughly 76 years you can see how many of us will or may have many pets over the years. With this in mind, we may start to see many signs of aging in our pets such as:
Loss of eyesight.
Loss of hearing.
Slowing down.
·Weight fluctuations.
·Changes in appetite.
Joint and muscle issues.
Change in their cognitive function or energy level.
However, how patient are we with our aging pets? Especially if we are still thriving in life. Granted we all grow old eventually, but it seems when our pets start to exhibit aging signs, wetoo many people tend to be more impatient or harsher with our words. The key avoiding harshness or mistreatment is paying attention to the subtle signs of aging.
If you call them and they don’t come running, it could be their hearing is starting to go.
They tend to get in the way as they can’t hear you approaching or see things as well as they used to.
You feed them, but they don’t always eat.
We want them to go hiking, but they can barely get up the hill forcing you to carry them down for everyone’s safety.
They are walking or acting in a slower or stiff manner.
Their energy is off, and they seem to lack energy more.
When these signs begin to come to light are you patient with them or simply getting agitated on how it’s putting you out?
We must all realize that we all begin to age, and your pets are no different. The difference is how you react to this aging. Maybe it’s time to reflect on how much your pet has been there for you. What did they give you over their lifetime?
During the nights you cried, and they consoled you.
When you were in bed sick and fighting to get better as they cuddled by your side letting you know they were there for you.
When you opened that door after a long hard day and found their excited look and excited body language showing you how glad they were to see you.
They were your best friend and there for you when you needed them.
No one can make you feel more special than the love of a pet. When they begin to age it’s time for us to show them how special they are and how much we appreciate everything they have done for us.
Here’s to caring for your elder pet with love and grace.
