When you spend time with your pet, what do you notice?
Are they receptive to you?
Are they running the other way when you approach?
Are they hiding from you?
We tend to forget about our animal companions when we’ve had a bad day or life changes that have affected our emotional state. But you can learn a lot about your pet and yourself by overserving their behavioral patterns.
Your dog may start digging more than usual.
Your dog may bark more insistently.
Your dog or cat may start chewing or scratching more.
Your cat may meow more often than normal.
Your horse may seem more skittish or fearful.
Your horse may not follow your lead as well as before.
These are all signs that they may be mirroring or reflecting your emotions and energy, only in different ways. How can this be? As your life changes, so does your mood and emotions. When this happens, your pets tend to react with different behaviors. Some behavior issues may be more subtle than others, but when you pay close attention to your pets you can better understand these behaviors, or even where and when they began. Here are a few things you may want to consider:
First thing: always have your vet rule out any physical issues.
Have there been any recent changes in your living situation?
Has your family or work dynamic changed?
Have you added or lost a family member recently?
Have you added or lost a pet member lately?
Essentially you want to look at all the changes in your life that have happened in the past 6 - 12 months as these changes can directly affect your pet(s). You must remember that your pets tend to act out with their behavior to get your attention. This is their way of saying they don’t like the change, or they are trying to adjust as you are. But you also want to remember that as we are emotional beings, they are as well, and pick up on our emotional state. So, if you want your pet to be calmer, centered and less fearful, it needs to start with you.
Write down all the changes in your life and how you have reacted to these changes. A simple list like this can help you see what you may be overlooking in your usual view.
Know that the only control you have is over your own emotional state, mindset, body, and actions.
Increase your exercise by walking more to help you dispel much of your own stress.
Spend more time with people who can support you in a positive way during these changes.
Turn your devices off and give yourself a device break. This includes the TV.
Take time to breathe and release your emotions.
Spend quality time with your pet allowing you both to enjoy each other’s company.
When you work on you is when you will notice some of the behavior your pets have been showing can begin to dissipate.
