A recent study has found that pets can help our children become better behaved adults and can improve their social skills. These studies found that children who grew up with a dog or cat had 40% less conduct issues with peers and adapted better with pro-social behavior.
Just the simple act of walking the dog or playing allowed these children to build a bond and respect for other children. The research found that these children did much better when dealing with difficult social issues with their peers allowing them to handle conflict much better than those who grew up without a pet. Why?
Feeding time allowed these children to see how another living thing counted on them.
Play time showed them compassion as they learned to be nice.
The motion of walking provided much needed physical activity for their overall health.
Learning responsibility for another being as well as patience and compassion.
This and many studies have found that having a pet in the family while growing up gives us the opportunity to deal with difficult situations in a much better way. Not only is it healthy for our physical health, but mentally as well.
Talking with your kinds to teach them or encourage "quiet time” to help their pets become more calm and connected with them can also help kids model that same behavior instead of becoming more and more unruly when things don’t immediately go their way. This is especially helpful during the “stay-at-home” patterns we are living in.
Before you doubt whether it’s a good decision to add a pet to your ever-growing family, do the research. You will find that everyone in the family benefits from a pet.
Here’s to your health,
